Energy Savings Certificates to monetise your energy-efficiency investments

Energy Savings Certificates

Turn verified final-energy savings into additional economic value for your efficiency projects

Energy-efficiency investments do more than reduce future consumption and operating costs. Through Spain's Energy Savings Certificate System (CAE), the annual final-energy savings generated by an eligible project can also have an economic value.

At Bavion, we analyse the investment, determine whether it can be processed as a standardised or singular measure, calculate the potentially certifiable savings, structure the technical documentation and support the process of transferring those savings to an obligated or delegated entity through a CAE Agreement.

The objective is to incorporate the value of energy savings into the economic assessment of the investment from the earliest possible stage.

An energy-efficiency investment should be assessed not only by the energy it saves, but also by the economic value that those savings can generate through the CAE System.

Could your energy-efficiency investment generate additional value through the CAE System?

Energy-efficiency project and CAE eligibility

We analyse the investment, baseline situation, expected energy reduction and available evidence to determine whether the project can generate certifiable savings.

Assess the CAE potential before or as early as possible in the investment process

We identify the technical change generating the reduction in final-energy consumption and distinguish genuine efficiency improvements from other investments that do not create eligible savings.

Projects can include improvements in industrial processes, HVAC, building envelope, lighting, mobility and other eligible technologies across the sectors covered by the system.

We establish the situation before the investment and determine the annual final-energy saving generated by the new solution using the methodology applicable to the project.

We review the investment dates and any public support received, because timing and funding sources can affect CAE eligibility.

In particular, an action benefiting from a programme financed through the National Energy Efficiency Fund cannot also be submitted for CAE issuance.

We estimate the certifiable energy savings and use them to assess the potential economic value of the operation before entering negotiations with an obligated or delegated entity.

Standardised energy-efficiency measures from the CAE Catalogue

We identify the applicable technical sheet and calculate the energy savings using the predefined methodology established in the national CAE Catalogue.

Use the applicable catalogue methodology to quantify savings with a predefined calculation framework

We review the current catalogue to determine whether the investment matches an existing standardised measure and verify its scope, technical requirements and application conditions.

We apply the variables, formulas, coefficients and technical parameters included in the corresponding sheet to calculate the annual final-energy saving.

We identify the technical documentation, invoices, product characteristics, photographs, declarations and other evidence required by the applicable sheet.

We work with the current version of the catalogue and its latest amendments rather than relying on historical versions of individual technical sheets.

Singular energy-efficiency projects

We structure projects that are not covered by a standardised technical sheet and require a project-specific methodology to demonstrate the energy savings achieved.

Demonstrate the savings of complex or non-standard projects through a project-specific technical methodology

We describe the technical intervention, operating conditions, equipment, processes and energy flows affected by the efficiency improvement.

We establish the reference consumption and define the calculations, measurements or energy-audit methodology required to determine the resulting final-energy saving.

For singular measures with expected final-energy savings above 1 GWh, the regulations allow a voluntary prior consultation before execution, supported by a favourable preliminary assessment from an ENAC-accredited verifier.

This provides greater certainty regarding both project eligibility and the proposed calculation methodology, although final verification remains necessary after execution.

We prepare the technical project, plans, photographic evidence, baseline and post-intervention information, calculations and supporting documentation required for verification and issuance.

Monetisation of energy savings and CAE Agreement

We structure the information required to transfer energy savings to an obligated or delegated entity and convert them into an additional economic return for the investment.

Turn verified energy savings into additional economic value for the project

The original owner of the savings is generally the person or entity whose decision makes the efficiency investment possible. A company carrying out an eligible investment can therefore benefit economically from the CAE System even if it is not an obligated or delegated entity.

Only obligated and delegated entities can hold CAE. The company generating the savings therefore transfers ownership of those savings to one of these entities so that it can subsequently request the corresponding certificates.

The transfer is formalised through a CAE Agreement, which records the action, expected or achieved savings, consideration, useful life and the parties' obligations.

The consideration must be defined and the agreement transfers ownership of the annual final-energy savings to the obligated or delegated entity.

We quantify the savings and prepare the technical and economic information required to compare proposals and negotiate the transfer of the energy savings.

The CAE System does not establish a fixed sale price: the consideration is agreed between the parties.

Why manage your Energy Savings Certificates with Bavion?

Early CAE assessment

Identify whether the investment can generate certifiable savings before losing documentary or economic opportunities.

Correct calculation route

Determine whether the project should follow a standardised catalogue sheet or a singular calculation methodology.

Quantified savings

Translate technical improvements into annual final-energy savings that can support the CAE operation.

Greater economic return

Incorporate the value of the energy savings into the economics of the efficiency investment.

Complete technical documentation

Maintain the evidence required for verification and subsequent certificate issuance.

End-to-end coordination

Connect project owner, obligated or delegated entity and verifier within one coherent process.

Sustainability

Identify public funding and green-investment opportunities that can complement your energy-efficiency strategy, analysing compatibility with the CAE System before structuring the project.
